Prof. Herbert Görtz

Herbert Görtz began his musical career as a choirboy in the Aachen Cathedral Choir. After graduating from Aachen’s Kaiser-Karls Gymnasium he studied at the conservatories in Cologne and Salzburg with a main focus on conducting, which he completed with honours. Subsequently, he was hired as assistant to the Federal Youth Orchestra and the Beethoven Orchestra in Bonn. This was followed by engagements as Kapellmeister at the Theatre Oberhausen and at the Staats Theatre Braunschweig as well as Deputy General Music Director in Münster. He took on other temporary assignments or guest appearances at home and abroad, including in Italy, Poland, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria and Ukraine, and gala and recitals, for example, with Gundula Janowitz, Siegfried Jerusalem, Hermann Prey, Anne Schwanewilms and Iris Vermillion. As conductor, Herbert Görtz has conducted more than 1000 performances in the fields of opera, operetta, musical, ballet and children’s opera, working together with renowned directors such as Willy Decker, Dominique Mentha and Gert Westphal. His repertoire includes important works from all periods and with the most diverse compositions.

In 1993, Görtz followed a call to the Cologne University of Music and Dance, which appointed him professor of orchestral, choral and ensemble conducting at the Aachen department. A few years later he also took over the musical direction of the university’s own symphony orchestra and, in cooperation with the Theatre Aachen, the musical direction of the opera school. From 2001 to 2005 Herbert Görtz was elected dean and finally in 2009 appointed managing director of the Aachen location of the Cologne Music Academy.

In addition, Herbert Görtz since 2005 Chairman of the Association of “Friends of Aachen Dommusik”.
